하나님께서는 자비를 베푸시는 분이시다. 예수 그리스도께서는 마태복음 9:19절에서 바리새인들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. 마 9:13 “너희는 가서 내가 긍휼을 원하고 제사를 원치 아니하노라 하신 뜻이 무엇인지 배우라 내가 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 부르러 왔노라 하시니라”
인간들에게서 제사를 받고자 하는 것이 하나님께서 바라는 바가 아니라 인간에게 자비를 베풀고자 하시는 것이 그분께서 바라시는 바다. 과거에는 이방인들이 하나님을 믿지 않는 바람에 하나님의 자비를 누리지 못하고 유대인들이 누렸지만 정작 메시아께서 이 땅에 오시자 이번에는 유대인들이 그분을 믿지 않음으로써 하나님의 자비를 발로 차 버렸다. 그 결과 이제는 이방인들이 대신 그 자비를 받게 되었다.

에베소서 2:1-3
1 너희의 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다
2 그 때에 너희가 그 가운데서 행하여 이 세상 풍속을 좇고 공중의 권세 잡은 자를 따랐으니 곧 지금 불순종의 아들들 가운데서 역사하는 영(靈)이라
3 전에는 우리도 다 그 가운데서 우리 육체의 욕심을 따라 지내며 육체와 마음의 원하는 것을 하여 다른 이들과 같이 본질상 진노의 자녀이었더니
1.As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
2.in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
3.All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

골로새서 1:21,22
21 전에 악한 행실로 멀리 떠나 마음으로 원수가 되었던 너희를
22 이제는 그의 육체의 죽음으로 말미암아 화목케 하사 너희를 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우고자 하셨으니
21.Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.
22.But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation--

하나님께서 이방인들에게 자비를 베푸신 것은 그들로 하여금 자비를 누리기만 하라고 주신 것이 아니다. 하나님께로부터 받은 자비를 유대인들에게 보여 주는 것, 이것은 하나님께로부터 자비를 얻은 이방인들이 해야 될 몫이다. 우리가 구원을 받고 거듭난 그리스도인이라면 우리에게는 하나님의 자비하심을 유대인들에게 가르쳐 줄 기회도 주어진 것이다.
이런 점에서 본다면 수많은 그리스도인들이 하나님께로부터 받은 자비를 오용하고 있는 셈이다.

창세기 18:26
26 여호와께서 가라사대 내가 만일 소돔 성 중에서 의인 오십을 찾으면 그들을 위하여 온 지경을 용서하리라
26.The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

창세기 19:16,17
16 그러나 롯이 지체하매 그 사람들이 롯의 손과, 그 아내의 손과, 두 딸의 손을 잡아 인도하여 성밖에 두니 여호와께서 그에게 인자를 더하심이었더라
17 그 사람들이 그들을 밖으로 이끌어 낸 후에 이르되 `도망하여 생명을 보존하라 돌아보거나 들에 머무르거나 하지 말고 산으로 도망하여 멸망함을 면하라'
16.When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.

15 저희의 주림을 인하여 하늘에서 양식을 주시며 저희의 목마름을 인하여 반석에서 물을 내시고 또 주께서 옛적에 손을 들어 맹세하시고 주마 하신 땅을 들어가서 차지하라 명하셨사오나
16 저희와 우리 열조가 교만히 하고 목을 굳게 하여 주의 명령을 듣지 아니하고
17 거역하며 주께서 저희 가운데 행하신 기사를 생각지 아니하고 목을 굳게하며 패역하여 스스로 한 두목을 세우고 종 되었던 땅으로 돌아가고자 하였사오나 오직 주는 사유하시는 하나님이시라 은혜로우시며 긍휼히 여기시며 더디 노하시며 인자가 풍부하시므로 저희를 버리지 아니하셨나이다
15.In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.
16."But they, our forefathers, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and did not obey your commands.
17.They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,
