섬긴다는 것은 봉사의 의미로서 “밥상을 차려주는 것,” 즉 보살피고 시중든다는 뜻이다. 주님께서 우리를 목사로 부르셨다면, 그것은 우리로 하여금 다른 사람들을 보살피고 시중들라고 부르신 것이다. “가르치는 일”도 마찬가지다. 다른 사람을 가르치되 보살피고 시중들 듯이 가르쳐야 한다.

“권면하는 일” 역시 마찬가지다. 다른 사람에게 진리를 따라 살도록 권면하되, 그들을 보살피고 시중들듯이 권면해야 한다. “권면하는 사람”은 곧 “설교자”를 말한다. 예전엔 설교자는 교회를 지키고 앉아 있는 사람이고 권면하는 사람은 권면하며 돌아다니는 사람으로 보았다. 아닌게아니라 여기저기 돌아다니면서 사람들이 행동하도록 촉구하는 능력의 뛰어난 사람이 따로 있는 것은 사실이다. 이런 사람들을 두고 현대에 와서는 “동기부여자(motivator)-부흥사"라고 흔히 부른다. 이런 사람들은 설교는 잘 하지만 마음을 움직여 행동하도록 하는 데에는 소질이 없는가 하면, 선동하는 데는 능하지만 설교는 잘 못하는 사람들도 있다.
“자비(긍휼)를 베푸는 자는 즐거움으로”, 누구를 용서하는데도 두 가지 방식이 있다.
누구를 용서하면서 “좋아, 그렇다면 내가 용서하지,”하는 경우가 있는데, 이 구절은 그렇게 하지 말고, “응, 나는 벌써 용서했는 걸!” 하고 “즐거움으로” 하라고 말씀한다.
고린도후서 8:1-9
1 형제들아 ! 하나님께서 마게도냐 교회들에게 주신 은혜를 우리가 너희에게 알게 하노니
2 환난의 많은 시련 가운데서 저희 넘치는 기쁨과 극한 가난이 저희로 풍성한 연보를 넘치도록 하게 하였느니라

8.I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.
9.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
