Abraham Lincoln, who kept the commandment, ‘Love your enemy’, in the Bible
Lincoln was so excited about being in charge of the same case with Edwin Stanton, one of the famous lawyers at that time.
링컨은 유명한 변호사 중 한 명인 애드윈 스탠튼과 같은 사건을 맡게 되어 매우 들떠 있었습니다.
The reason was that Lincoln was expected to learn many things from his senior lawyer, Stanton.
자신보다 선배인 스탠튼에게 변호사로서 많은 것을 배울 수 있을 것이라 기대했기 때문이었습니다.
However, Stanton thought differently. He went out the court with anger, saying that he didn`t want to work with a rookie lawyer.
그러나, 스탠튼의 생각은 달랐습니다. 자신은 애송이 변호사와 함께 일하기 싫다며, 화를 내고 법정을 나가버렸습니다.
His unexpected happening made Lincoln embarrassed, disappointed and felt deeply insulted.
예상과는 다른 전개에 링컨은 매우 당혹스럽고 실망스러웠으며 심지어 모욕감을 느꼈습니다.
So, time passed, Lincoln was elected as the 16th U.S. president.
세월이 흘러 링컨은 미국의 16대 대통령으로 당선되었습니다.
And he nominated Stanton as the Secretary of Defense without hesitation and it made everyone surprised.
그런데 망설임 없이 스탠튼을 국방부 장관으로 임명하여 모두를 놀라게 했습니다.
Lincoln himself did never mind being ignored by Stanton.
링컨은 그 자신이 스탠튼에게 무시를 당한 것에 대해서는 전혀 개의치 않았습니다.
Since he loved America most, where God allowed him to control, so he just found the right person for the nation.
그는 하나님이 그에게 통치하기를 허락하신 ‘미국’을 가장 사랑하였기에, 그저 나라를 위한 적임자를 찾았던 것입니다.
He thought of a human relationship as follows,
그는 인간관계에 대해 다음과 같이 생각했습니다.
‘The best way to get rid of my enemy is to make him my friend.’
‘적을 없애는 가장 좋은 방법은 그를 친구로 만드는 것이다.’
‘If you want someone to be on your side, make him be sure that you are his true friend first.’
‘만약 누군가를 당신 편으로 만들고 싶다면, 먼저 당신이 그의 진정한 친구임을 확신시켜라.’
Lincoln was a sincere christian who believed in His Word and obeyed Him.
링컨은 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 순종한 신실한 그리스도인이었습니다.
He loved God and his neighbor as himself.
그는 하나님을 사랑하고, 내 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑했습니다.
He was the president who made the white house a prayer room.
그는 백악관을 기도실로 만든 대통령이었습니다.
Jesus also says, “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them(Luke 6:32).”
예수님도 “너희가 만일 너희를 사랑하는 자만을 사랑하면 칭찬받을 것이 무엇이냐 죄인들도 사랑하는 자는 사랑하느니라(눅 6:32)” 고 말씀하십니다.
The Confucian culture in Korea seems to be expected that someone comes to us first. We also seem to hope that somebody reads our mind without saying.
한국의 유교적 문화는 누군가 우리에게 먼저 다가와 주기를 기다거나 혹은 우리가 어떤 말도 하지 않아도 그 마음을 알아주기를 바라는 것처럼 보입니다.
As Jesus Christ who became flesh and has been dwelling among us, we have gained the new life, I hope that we first show more beautiful scenes loving others with the love of Jesus.
말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 안에 거하신 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리가 새 생명을 얻었듯이, 우리가 먼저 예수님의 사랑으로 다른 이들을 사랑하는 아름다운 모습들을 보여주기를 소망합니다.
