◎마태복음 18장 21~35절(Matthew 18:21~35)
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? 'Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 'Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.' 'But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 'This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.'”(NIV)
“그 때에 베드로가 나아와 이르되 주여 형제가 내게 죄를 범하면 몇 번이나 용서하여 주리이까 일곱 번까지 하오리이까 예수께서 이르시되 네게 이르노니 일곱 번뿐 아니라 일곱 번을 일흔 번까지라도 할지니라 그러므로 천국은 그 종들과 결산하려 하던 어떤 임금과 같으니 결산할 때에 만 달란트 빚진 자 하나를 데려오매 갚을 것이 없는지라 주인이 명하여 그 몸과 아내와 자식들과 모든 소유를 다 팔아 갚게 하라 하니 그 종이 엎드려 절하며 이르되 내게 참으소서 다 갚으리이다 하거늘 그 종의 주인이 불쌍히 여겨 놓아 보내며 그 빚을 탕감하여 주었더니 그 종이 나가서 자기에게 백 데나리온 빚진 동료 한 사람을 만나 붙들어 목을 잡고 이르되 빚을 갚으라 하매 그 동료가 엎드려 간구하여 이르되 나에게 참아 주소서 갚으리이다 하되 허락하지 아니하고 이에 가서 그가 빚을 갚도록 옥에 가두거늘 그 동료들이 그것을 보고 몹시 딱하게 여겨 주인에게 가서 그 일을 다 알리니 이에 주인이 그를 불러다가 말하되 악한 종아 네가 빌기에 내가 네 빚을 전부 탕감하여 주었거늘 내가 너를 불쌍히 여김과 같이 너도 네 동료를 불쌍히 여김이 마땅하지 아니하냐 하고 주인이 노하여 그 빚을 다 갚도록 그를 옥졸들에게 넘기니라 너희가 각각 마음으로부터 형제를 용서하지 아니하면 나의 하늘 아버지께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라” (개역개정)
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked: 그 때에 베드로가 나아와 이르되
Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me?: 주여 형제가 내게 죄를 범하면 몇 번이나 용서하여 주리이까
Up to seven times?: 일곱 번까지 하오리이까
Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times: 예수께서 이르시되 네게 이르노니 일곱 번뿐 아니라 일곱 번을 일흔 번까지라도 할지니라
Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king: 그러므로 천국은 어떤 임금과 같으니
who wanted to settle accounts with his servants: 그 종들과 결산하려 하던
As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him: 결산할 때에 만 달란트 빚진 자 하나를 데려오매
Since he was not able to pay: 갚을 것이 없는지라
the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt: 주인이 명하여 그 몸과 아내와 자식들과 모든 소유를 다 팔아 갚게 하라 하니
The servant fell on his knees before him: 그 종이 엎드려 절하며 이르되
Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything': 내게 참으소서 다 갚으리이다
The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go: 그 종의 주인이 불쌍히 여겨 놓아 보내며 그 빚을 탕감하여 주었더니
But when that servant went out: 그 종이 나가서
he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii: 자기에게 백 데나리온 빚진 동료 한 사람을 만나
He grabbed him and began to choke him: 붙들어 목을 잡고 이르되
'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded: 빚을 갚으라 하매
His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him: 그 동료가 엎드려 간구하여 이르되
'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.': 나에게 참아 주소서 갚으리이다 하되
But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt: 허락하지 아니하고 이에 가서 그가 빚을 갚도록 옥에 가두거늘
When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed: 그 동료들이 그것을 보고 몹시 딱하게 여겨
and went and told their master everything that had happened: 주인에게 가서 그 일을 다 알리니
Then the master called the servant in: 이에 주인이 그를 불러다가 말하되
'You wicked servant,' he said: 악한 종아
'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to: 네가 빌기에 내가 네 빚을 전부 탕감하여 주었거늘
Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?: 내가 너를 불쌍히 여김과 같이 너도 네 동료를 불쌍히 여김이 마땅하지 아니하냐
In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed: 주인이 노하여 그 빚을 다 갚도록 그를 옥졸들에게 넘기니라
This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you: 나의 하늘 아버지께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라
unless you forgive your brother from your heart: 너희가 각각 마음으로부터 형제를 용서하지 아니하면
