“자유로운 중국 꿈꾸며 예수 안에서 동역했던 친구”

차이나에이드(ChinaAid) 대표 밥 푸 목사(Bob Fu)는 이날 행사에 참석해 중국의 인권과 종교 자유를 위해 한평생 헌신한 리바이광 변호사를 위한 추도연설을 했다. 다음은 추도연설 내용.

밥 푸 목사의 추도연설(Dr. Lee's Eulogy, given by Ps. Bob Fu)

"리바이광이 죽었어. 죽었어. 죽었다고..." 흐느끼던 친구가 이 슬픈 소식을 전했을 때, 저는 도저히 믿을 수 없었고, 충격에 휩싸였습니다. 그 날은 2월 25일 주일 저녁이었습니다.
("Li Baiguang died. He was gone. He was gone..."  I was stunned with utter shock and disbelief while listening to a weeping friend sharing with me the sad news. It was in the late evening of February 25 Sunday.)

그가 난징 군 병원에서 갑작스럽고도 미심쩍은 죽음을 맞이하기 2주 전에, 저는 그와 함께 워싱턴 DC에서 열린 국가 조찬 기도회에 참석했습니다. 그는 종교의 자유와 법치주의의 수호자로 세계적인 명성을 얻었으며, 경건한 사람이었고, 한나 쉬한메이의 헌신적인 남편이자, "작고 순수한 마음"이라고 이름한 8살짜리 아들의 따뜻한 아버지였습니다. 그리고 저에게 그는 소중하고 믿음직한 형제, 자유로운 중국을 꿈꾸며 그리스도 안에서 함께 동역했던 친구였습니다.
(Barely two weeks prior to his sudden mysterious death in a military hospital in Nanjing city, he and I were still together attending the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC. He is a world renown religious freedom and rule of law defender, a godly man, a faithful husband to Hannah Hanmei Xu and caring father of their 8 years old son named "Little Pure Heart" and to me, he is a dear trustful brother and fellow coworker in Christ for freedom in China.)

리 박사는 1968년에 한 가난한 가정에서 태어났습니다. 제가 태어나기 몇 달 전이었습니다. 그의 아버지는 그가 어렸을 때 돌아가셨습니다. 힘들게 생계를 꾸려가시던 어머니 밑에서 다른 형제들과 극심한 가난을 겪었던 그는 항상 더 나은 사람이 되겠다고 결심했습니다. 중국 명문 대학인 베이징대학교에 합격하여 헌법으로 박사학위를 받고 난 뒤, 그는 중국이 입헌 민주주의를 이루어 인권과 종교의 자유가 이 민주국가로부터 보장되고 시행되는 날을 꿈꾸었습니다.
(Dr Li was born in a humble family in 1968, only a few moths younger than me. His father died when he was a small child. Being raised by her hard working mom with other siblings under extreme poverty, he was always determined to change. After successfully entered and graduated from China's most prestigious Beijing University with a Ph.D on constitutional law, he was dreaming for China to become a constitutional democracy where human rights and religious freedom will be guaranteed and implemented by a democratic state.)

한 대학의 법학 교수가 된 직후부터, 리 박사는 중국 민주주의 반체체 인사들의 모임에 합류하여 헌장의 초안을 만드는데 도움을 주고 법적인 조언을 해주었습니다. 이 때문에, 그는 수없이 납치되어 고문을 당했습니다. 그는 공교육을 구상하며 로버트 스마일즈(Robert Smiles)와 같은 서구 자유주의 작가들의 책을 번역하고 소개하는 출판업을 시작했습니다. 그러나 위그노로 알려진 17세기 프랑스 프로테스탄티즘이 받은 핍박과 인내에 관한 책을 읽고 번역한 뒤, 그는 완전히 변화되었습니다. 악과 맞서는 힘, 정의, 사랑의 근원은 불변의 기독교 신앙 안에서 찾을 수 있음을 깨달았습니다. 그는 믿음, 고결함, 그리고 자유라는 헌법의 기본적인 세 요소의 토대는 절대 흔들리지 않는다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
(At first, Being a teacher of law in a university, he joined China's democracy dissident circles helping them draft charters and provide legal advice. For that, he was kidnapped and tortured multiple times. Then he started a publishing business envisioning public education by introducing books he translated by western liberalism authors such as Robert Smiles. However, his life was drastically turned around after he read and translate a book about the persecution and perseverance of the French Protestantism known as Huguenots in 17th century. He found the source of strength, justice and love in facing evil is located in persistent Christian faith. He discovered the constitutional foundational triangle among faith, virtues and freedom without any of which the foundation will be shaken.)

2005년, 그는 예수 그리스도께 삶을 드렸습니다. 이로 인해 삶의 방식만 변화된 것이 아니라 그의 행동 양식 또한 달라졌습니다.
(In 2005 he surrendered his life to Christ Jesus. Not only his own life style was transformed, his way of doing things had become different.)

자유주의 지식인들은 '헌법의 지배' 및 '개혁'과 같은, 가시적인 대립과 저항에 관한 거대한 주제들을 수년에 걸쳐 논해 왔지만, 리 박사는 달랐습니다. 그는 그의 전략을 "개미전략"이라고 불렀습니다.
(Instead of liberal intellectuals' decades-long discussions of confrontational visible grand themes and resistance like constitutional governance and reform, he characterized his strategy as an "ant strategy.")

그는 이렇게 말했습니다. "최근 나는 한 깨달음을 얻었네. 난 기꺼이 한 마리의 개미가 되길 원해. 내가 읽었던 책들이 말하는 '인권'과 '자유'들을 하나씩 현실화 시킬 것이네. 이것이 나의 신념이야. 합법적인 절차를 통해 그것을 이룰 수 있어. 여름이면 개미들은 먹이를 모으지. 나 또한 오늘, '인권 변호'라는 방법으로 이 먹이를 옮길 생각이네. 먹이를 옮기면서 나는 경험을 쌓을 것이고, 나의 목표를 성취하기 위해 이 먹이들이 필요할 날을 준비하게 될 것이네."
(He said :"recently  I've had a realization: I'm willing to become an ant. I want to take the rights and freedoms in the books and, through case after case, bring them into the real world bit by bit. This is my personal stance. The path to this is legal procedure. In summer, the ant gathers food. Today, I'm also transporting food under the framework of rights defense, and in doing so accumulating experience and results for the arrival of the day")

그 "개미" 아이디어는 그가 죽기 전까지 과거 10년 동안 중국에서 인권 변호사로 활동한 그를 인도해 주었습니다. 자그마한 한 마리 개미처럼, 리 박사는 참으로 겸손했습니다. 그가 비록 조지 W. 부시 전 미국 대통령을 세 번이나 만나고 부시 대통령의 친구라고 불리웠어도 말입니다. 리 박사는 매체들의 인터뷰 요청을 좀처럼 수락하지 않았고, 정치적인 슬로건을 외친 적도 별로 없습니다. 그는 단지 중국 곳곳을 여행하며 시민들의 종교적인 자유와 인권이 침해되는 수백 건의 사건들을 맡았습니다. 리 박사는 끈기 있게, 그리고 체계적으로 모든 법적인 절차를 따랐습니다.
(It was this "ant" idea that had become Dr. Li's driven philosophy for his legal defense work in China for the past decade until his death. Like an little ant he is a humble man even though he was known as President George W Bush's friend with whom they met three times. He rarely accepted media interviews and shouted out slogans. He was just traveling around China taking up hundreds of cases where millions of citizens' religious freedom and human rights were violated. He patiently and methodically followed each and every step of the legal procedure according to the letter of the law.)

집을 짓기 위해 조금씩 흙을 나르는 끈질긴 한 마리의 개미처럼, 리 박사는 인권변호운동에 관한 그의 전략을 이렇게 말했습니다. "우리가 할 수 있는 건 조금씩 나사를 풀고 흙더미를 하나씩 옮기는 걸세." 리 박사는 이렇게 함으로써 아래에서부터 점차적으로 전체주의를 해체할 수 있다고 믿었습니다.
(As a little patient ant who moved the soil bit by bit in order to build a home, Dr Li envisioned his strategy in human rights lawyers movement. "All you can do is loosen the screws one by one and turn the soil over clump by clump," he said. Dr. Li hopes by doing that will make the gradual dismantling of autocracy from the margins possible in China.)

2017년 1월, 저는 차이나에이드의 창립 15주년 기념식을 위해 그를 워싱턴으로 초청했습니다. 그 행사는 의회도서관에서 열렸습니다. 리 박사는 저보다 먼저 대대적인 탄압을 예견했습니다. "지금부터 중국의 인권은 가장 어두운 시기를 지날 것이네." 그가 말했습니다. 그러나 리 박사는 두려워하지 않았습니다. 중국의 인권 운동가들이 하나님께서 주신 지혜와 지식으로 인권, 민주주의, 그리고 법치주의을 수호할 것이라고 장담했습니다. 가장 기억에 남는 것은 그의 긍정적인 어조였습니다. 그는 로마서 13장을 인용하면서 선언했습니다. "밤이 거의 다 지나고 있어. 낮이 가까워왔네 (롬 13:12, 쉬운성경)."
(In January 2017, I invited him to travel to Washington, D.C. for ChinaAid 15th anniversary held at the Library of Congress. He anticipated a major crackdown was looming large already. "From this point forward, human rights in China will enter its darkest period." But he was intimidated. He pledged that rights defenders in China would use their God-given wisdom and intelligence to promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The most notable thing was his optimistic tone based on God's Word. He quoted Romans 13, declaring "The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.")

이 담대한 작은 개미가 젊은 나이에 주님 품에 안겼습니다. 리 박사는 의심스러운 정황에서 사망했고 세상은 그가 어떻게 죽었는지 절대 알 수 없을 것입니다. 그러나 리 박사는 그가 산 49년의 삶 동안 옮겨왔던 이 흙들이 굳건한 토대가 될 것을 알고 기뻐할 것입니다. 새로운 중국의 입헌 민주주의 광장을 세우기 위한 토대 말입니다. 우리 믿음의 목자장 되신 예수 그리스도께서는 리 박사에게 분명 이렇게 말씀하실 것입니다. "잘하였다, 착하고 충성된 종아."
(Although that "little boldest ant" has died in such a young age under such a mysterious circumstance that the world had not got a way to figure out the truth cause of his death, yet Dr Li should be pleased to know the dirt he had moved in his 49 years life will be a solid foundation for the big pile for the constitutional democratic plaza for a future new China. The chief shepherd of his faith Jesus Christ has surely declared you as a "Well Done, good and faithful servant.")
